The game is going to ship without a bestiary.
There are a few reasons for this:
- It is probably impossible to top The Monster Overhaul by Skerples, or Volume 2: Monsters & by Luke Gearing.
- The monster design is intended to be compatible with all B/X or AD&D derivatives. You can use any existing bestiary. The monsters do not have any stats to worry about besides the ones already present in any B/X or OSE statblock.
- This article.
I am slowly working on a list of 100 monsters that will comprise the eventual More Skulls Bestiary. These monsters are already appearing throughout Castle Gygar, Monster Condo, and the upcoming All The Way Down. So, the Bestiary will have a lot of “repeat” content.
But the game is going to include the Information in this article. You can run any monster you want, at a basic level, with two simple facts: It’s Hit Dice and its Type.
Type is derived from 5e. I have done numerous articles about average monster stats, in the pursuit of being able to more quickly make a variable monster statblock on the fly. I have taken this to its extreme for More Skulls. I went back and retroactively changed everything in the Average Monster Stats from the modifiers back to the full ability score, and then turned it back around to what those modifiers are for B/X (and functionally, More Skulls). You select whatever the monster is from the table, and apply those modifiers to the generalized statblock from the Monster Hit Die table. STR or DEX should be applied to To Hit; DEX should be applied to AC as appropriate. I go back and forth about how I’m going to handle CON. WIS should probably apply to Saves vs. Spells, if you do that.
I still don’t know how to account for the fact that More Skulls is going to use single saving throws; these numbers are still currently for B/X. There is simply going to have to be a “How To Run Monsters In Combat” spread.
For now, this should suffice. (“Ex:” in this table stands for “Extraplanar.” I have considered consolidating all three categories into a single category in the past.)
