TEN TANGIBLE TIPS FOR PLAYING A LIVE TEXT ROLEPLAY MEGAGAME

I didn’t edit this or run it by anyone else.

  1. Interact
Everyone is here to play the game. If there is a character you find interesting, interact with them. Talk to them. Ask where they hang out. Go there and hang out with them. Ask them questions about themselves. Have a conversation. Share something about your character.
  2. Play Your Guy
What does your character do? Just do that. Your character needs to eat, sleep, probably goes places to hang out and get drunk, get drugs, or do whatever they’re trying to do. So, do that. There’s so much shit going on, just be in the moment.
  3. Don’t Have Too Much Of A Plan
You can’t be everywhere at once. I mean, you can a little bit in these, but your character can’t be everywhere because it’s impossible to keep track of every single location and private thread you’re in. Go with the flow and let things happen.
  4. Collaborate With Others
If you’ve interacted with a player before, feel free to start a private DM with them out of character. Tell them what you liked about the interaction you had. Ask if they’re interested in having more interactions like that, or going somewhere. If not, respect their boundaries, but remember we’re all here to play the game, so most likely they’re gonna be down to clown.
  5. Take Breaks
You can’t play the game forever. You have responsibilities in your normal life: your job, family, loved ones, hobbies, etc. You also have to take care of your body. Drink water, eat well, take a shower, get some sleep. The game will still be there when you come back…at least, for a little while. Likewise you may need an emotional break from the game, so take that as well if you need it.
  6. If It Sucks, Hit The Bricks
If a situation or another player is causing you to have a bad time, you can just leave. Exit the thread, stop responding, close Discord, whatever you need to do. If someone is harassing you by engaging after you’ve already made the decision to bail, @ a moderator and tell them what’s up.
  7. Keep It To The Discord
This one’s pretty simple. Keep contact with other players that directly concerns the game inside of the game. This includes out of character disputes and problems you’re having. Players have been removed from games like this before for violating that boundary. The mod teams need all communication like that to stay on-server so they can be sure everyone is safe and having a good time. If you and your friends are hanging out outside of the server, no one would fault you for having a laugh at a moment or talking about something cool happening, but if there’s even a hint of collaboration or issues, you should take it back onto the server. Especially if it’s opsec!
  8. Bad Things Can Happen
Being in a megagame like this usually has some pretty heavy themes. Characters in the game can lie to you and the player behind the character isn’t obligated to tell you this is happening, because that’s how they win the game and you lose the game. Likewise, big events can affect your emotions: characters you like may get assassinated and leave the game. Popular players may get removed for moderator actions. The “plot” can happen and now everything’s on fire and everyone is going to die, for 6 hours, and then someone makes a deal and fixes it and everything is fine. Be prepared for this, and if it gets to be too much, remember #5.
  9. Take Big Swings
Go for broke. Be as weird as you want, be as heavy as you want. Make every moment you’re playing the game count. The worst that happens is nobody catches on to it and you looked a little cringe. But no one is paying that much attention anyway, so it’s okay. Lots of people like to go full method mode and dislike out of character discussion about a big roleplay scene; others want to plan some things out or talk it over while it’s happening. Figure out which kind of player you are, and play with folks who play like you do.
  10. Have Fun
Above all else, this is supposed to be a fun experience for everyone. If you aren’t having fun, consider why, and change your approach. When in doubt, remember #5 and #6.
